Markus Winkler was first elected to the Louisville Metro Council in 2018 and was re-elected as the representative for District 17 in 2022. Markus Winkler was first elected to the Louisville Metro Council in 2018 and was re-elected as the representative for District 17 in 2022. Markus has served in several positions of leadership during his time on the Metro Council including three years as Chair of the Louisville Metro Democratic Caucus and two terms as Metro Council President.
In 2026, he serves as Vice Chair of the Budget Committee. He is also a member of the Appropriations and Public Safety Committees.
Born in Germany, Markus’ family immigrated to the United States when he was 5. Through the support of his parents, Markus was able to become the first member of his family to attend college - enrolling at Centre College in 1997. Upon graduation in 2001, Markus enrolled in business school at the University of Memphis where he graduated at the top of his M.B.A. class. Throughout his professional and public career Markus has been recognized as a leader who empowers and develops his employees and designs innovative solutions to complex problems. He is recognized for his ability to reconcile public, private, business and community interests for the advancement of Louisville Metro and its citizens.
Markus is also deeply involved in the community, having volunteered with the Boys and Girls Club, Habitat for Humanity, Youth Villages, Stage One: The Louisville Children's Theatre, Uspiritus, and Doors to Hope serving in a variety of different roles.
Markus and his wife Stacie, along with their three children Emma, Elizabeth, and Benjamin, are residents of Anchorage where Markus is an active member of the community.
